SD Africa started as a distributor of solar water heating systems supplying a range of systems and solutions to a national dealer network. In 2010 we became involved in one of South Africa’s early mass roll-outs of solar water heaters supplying product, project management, installation services and support. This led the company in a new direction as a specialist service provider for large scale projects requiring a divergent set of skills, money and appetite for risk. Under our belt are 5,000 solar water heaters installed in RDP homes in Ga-Rankuwa, Tshwane for Eskom, 500 high pressure systems in Darling Western Cape; a roll out of solar water systems and heat pumps for 183 Eskom owned buildings in 120 towns in the northern provinces and 100 systems for Sibanye Mining’s Libanon Housing Village. We are proud of the role we have played in contributing to the success of the initiatives rolled out by Eskom and Government, by installing over 10,000 solar water heaters nationally.
In 2013 we took on our first water demand management project for City of Cape Town. In an effort to raise awareness of water scarcity, reduce wastage and moderate and control affordable water use for indigent households, the City embarked on a massive program to visit some 200,000 households, educating the families, fixing plumbing in homes to stop leaks and finally installing water demand management devices to manage water use. To date SDAfrica’s teams has visited and completed work for over 40,000 homes across the Peninsula.
Building on the experience gained, SD Africa bid for and was successful in being appointed as a service provider to install bulk water meters for the City. Bulk meters manage water supply to volume users such as flats and shopping centers. A new set of skills and investment in equipment and machinery was required to complete the work which includes breakdown and rebuilding of underground chambers, new chamber excavation and building and meter installation and commissioning. Our involvement in high profile projects such as these has empowered the company to implement ISO standard quality management systems and develop a core skill in the planning, execution and management of projects.
